Crosses And Mormonism
|
Latter-day Saints object to the use of a cross on their buildings and the wearing of the cross. They view the symbolism of
the cross as having a pagan origin and that it symbolizes Christ's torture and death, not his resurrection. LDS Apostle Bruce R. McConkie
stated: "The sectarian world falsely suppose that the climax of his (Christ’s) torture and suffering was on the cross …-- a view
which they keep ever before them by the constant use of the cross as a religious symbol. The fact is that intense and severe as
the suffering was on the cross, yet the great pains were endured in the Garden of Gethsemane. (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p.555)
The cross (not talking about the crucifix here) is supposed to represent Jesus' vicotry over death.
And although they reject the cross they have no other symbol that is directly link to Jesus to replace the cross. What do they stick on top of their temples? Moroni.
Mormons like to say they focus on the resurrected jesus and not the dead jesus which entirely misses the point of the cross but thats their reason.
Also, they might say dont like to display the murder weapon.
Finally, Mormons believe the atonement took place in the Garden of Gethsamene and not on the cross.
Mormons choose not to wear a cross to signify their religious beliefs. Instead they wear something else, something large that does not simply
hang around their necks. Something that most people can see, under their clothes. BYU coeds feel for them while dating returned missionaries. White
shirts on men reveal them. They must wear them 24hrs a day, 365 days a year except during physical activity and bathing. They are a
remnant of the early secret days of polygamy, initially worn only by the few that practiced polygamy BEFORE the 1843 revelation. Joseph Smith
removed his before he went to the Carthage jail, and informed the others with him to do the same. Mormons don't wear crosses, they wear
garments to remind them not of christ, but of the secret temple ceremony which began as an oath of secrecy about the early secret polygamy
practiced by Joe and his close friends.
