Which Part Of The Book Of Mormon Is Spalding's Manuscript?

The BoM was apparently patched together, beginning with Spalding's Manuscript Found as the starting point.

No one knows for sure how this was done, but there is enough evidence to make some informed guesses. Here's a reasonable conjecture about how it was assembled and modified:

When Spalding finished it, Manuscript Found probably consisted of the following books:

Words of Mormon, Lehi, Nephi, Jacob, Enos, Jaron, Omni, Mosiah, Alma, Helaman, 3 Nephi (Chapters 1-18), 4 Nephi, Mormon 1-7.

In the modern BoM, you can hear Spalding's voice as "it came to pass". His writing seems to have survived especially near the end of Alma.

Rigdon added theological inserts between 1823-1827. These inserts related to his beliefs at that time. They likely included King Benjamin's sermon, Alma 30 and 32, and a shorter version of Jesus' visit. He probably also added the slippery treasure stuff in Helaman about this time. So when Rigdon finished these insertions, the book contained the same books as Spalding but they now had Rigdon's theological imprint. They also contain his 19th centruy preacher-style language, such as the phrase "Children of Men".

In 1828, Smith lost the 116 pages, and that created a crisis.

To replace the lost pages, Rigdon likely borrowed material and ideas from Ethan Smith's View of the Hebrews. That's probably how we ended up with all the Isaiah inserts and the material on the scattering and gathering of Israel. You can find this material in the end of 1 Nephi, 2 Nephi, and 3 Nephi.

Because of the theological changes that occcurred in 1828, Rigdon also made additions of his own. In the first half of 1829, he probably added Mormon 8-10, Moroni, the insertions in Chapters 4 and 12 of Ether, and the end of 2 Nephi 31-33.

When you read the BoM, listen for the voice of the Preacher. That's likely Rigdon talking. The story teller is Spalding.

It preceded the Book of Mormon and seems just a little too similar to be coincidental.
“I immediately tore it down and lo, a cavity within the wall presented itself; it being about three feet in diameter from side to side and about two feet high. Within this cavity I found an earthen box with a cover which shut it perfectly tight. The box was two feet in length one and half in breadth and one and three inches in diameter. My mind filled with awful sensations which crowded fast upon me (( and )) would hardly permit my hands to remove this venerable deposit, but curiosity soon gained the ascendancy (( and )) the box was taken and raised to open (( its cover. )) When I had removed the cover I found that it contained twenty-eight (( rolls )) of parchment; and that when (( examined )) appeared to be manuscripts written in elegant hand with ROMAN letters and in the Latin Language. They were written on a variety of subjects. But the roll which principally attracted my attention contained a history of the author's life and that part of America which extends along the Great Lakes and the waters of the Mississippi. Extracts of the most interesting and important matters contained in this roll I take the liberty to publish. Gentle Reader, tread lightly on the ashes of the venerable dead. Thou must know that this country was once inhabited by great and powerful nations, considerably civilized and skilled in the arts of war; and that on ground where thou (( now )) treadest many a bloody battle hath been fought, and heroes by thousands have been made to bite the dust.”

The Spalding Manuscript

Solomon Spalding (1761-1816) is considered by some researchers to be the original author of the Book of Mormon. One aspect not addressed in the research is that Spalding engages in an acceptable practice of the day, namely heavy borrowing and outright plagiarism. This will have implications for the validity of wordprint studies comparing Spalding's manuscript and the Book of Mormon. Spalding demonstrates a lack of originality both in vocabulary and concept. The evidence for this is illustrated by comparing his manuscript to the History of the Rise, Progress and Termination of the American Revolution, published in 1805 by Mercy Otis Warren (1728-1814).

Warren, noted for her elegant prose, politely lectures the reader, in addition to relating history. She uses her History as a forum to enlighten the current generation with her "moral observations" on republicanism, power, greed, mankind, Christianity, good versus evil, and the plight of the American Indian. She implores the reader to not forget the hard-fought lessons of the revolution, lest freedom be lost. Also, Warren fears that a newly acquired prosperity will corrupt this generation. In effect, her History is a sermon preaching that God was instrumental in delivering the colonies and that avarice and ambition are the motives that impelled the Crown to engage in a wanton struggle of subjugation and slavery.

Spalding, a veteran of the Revolution, borrows from Warren as he relates his view on the war, using fictional Indians as the vehicle. Spalding is not so much interested in giving an accurate account of Indian history as he is in emulating Warren. Spalding imputes into his Indians motives and creates situations similar to the motives and Revolutionary War scenes described in Warren's history. Spalding, not content with borrowing her concepts, lifts her prose as well. As a result, his own moral melodrama emerges as a poor copy.

Spalding: Patterson And Lambdin

This is intended to be one of many threads discussing interesting facets (to me anyhow) concerning the claims that Solomon Spalding was at least partial author of the BoM. I'll start any such thread with the subject line "Spalding: " so that they are easily identifiable.

Anyhow, my first post here pertains to a little piece of information reported by Eber Howe in his 1834 book Mormonism Unvailed.

http://www.solomonspalding.com/docs/1...

In the final chapter, Howe makes mention of the printing office of Patterson and Lambdin, suggesting that this is where Spalding may have taken his manuscript while in Pittsburgh of hopes of getting it published.

There is a problem here, however, since Spalding died in 1816, and his widow left Pennsylvania for New York state in 1817. The problem is that the publishing firm under the partnership of "Patterson and Lambdin" did not form until 1818. Prior to that time, Robert Patterson (Lambdin's artner) had been in business with his brother Joseph Patterson under the name "Patterson and Patterson". If Spalding had appealed to either of the Pattersons to have his book published, it would have been through "Patterson and Patterson" or their hired printer Silas Engles.

This raises questions:

- How did the name of the firm "Patterson [Robert] and Lambdin" even get introduced into the mind of Howe? Although he states it was Spalding's widow who suggested it, that seems unlikely. She never knew a firm by that name while in Pittsburgh.

- Did somebody learn of the "Patterson and Lambdin" firm while investigating Spalding's activities in Pittsburgh? To me that seems very likely to be the source of the name. If Hurlbut or Howe made contacts with people in Pittsburgh, then they may have easily found people who knew of the firm. But Hurlbut and/or Howe may not been credibly informed that the firm by that name was not in existence during Spalding's lifetime. I suggest the name "Patterson and Lambdin" was a result of Hurltbut's or Howe's own investigation through people in Pittsburgh, and that they simply fell short of getting all the facts. Hurlbut may have even used the name while interviewing Spalding's widow, and she may have not known or recalled better to correct him since Lambdin was on the scene during the days of "Patterson [Robert] and Patterson [Joseph]", though only as a young assistant and not as a partner.

- Is any of this important? maybe not. But it suggests to me that the earliest investigators of the Spalding claims may have misplaced their focus on the firm of Patterson and Lambdin (1818-1823), and if they focused their inquiries on those knowledgable of that firm, then they may have missed out on gathering information about a potentially more important time frame when Spalding was still alive (1812-1816) when they might have learned much more about Silas Engles, Joseph Patterson, and Rigdon's early interactions with that printing office. Unfortunately, we know very little about what Hurlbut or Howe learned from people in Pittsburgh, suggesting that their efforts there weren't particularly fruitful. I just wonder if it was because they never became aware that Silas Engles or Joseph Patterson were perhaps the more important people to investigate.

Lets Say Manuscript Found Was Still In Exsistence - Where Would It Most Likely Turn Up?

Warning - speculaiton follows.

I believe that Hurlburt surrendered Manuscript Found to Mormon officials sometime between December 20 and December 31, 1833. If he did in fact give up the document at that time, Mormon officials would have likely either burned it or placed it under lock and key. If it exists today, it would be in a very secure place, such as the First Presidency vault.

The above speculation is based on the following sequence of events in late 1833 and early 1834.

DEC 20-30, 1833 - Hurlburt obtained a copu of Manuscript Found and showed it to several groups in Kirtland. After these showings, Manuscript Found was never again seen.
See:http://OliverCowdery.com/hurlbut/HChron4.htm#r036
http://mormonstudies.com/matilda1.htm

DEC 21-30, 1833 Hurlburt and Smith threatened one another. Smith said Hurlburt threated his life.

See: http://OliverCowdery.com/hurlbut/HChron4.htm#r036

DEC 31, 1833 Hurlburt showed Spalding's Oberlin Manuscript (manuscript Story) to Spalding's old associates, but now he did not show Manuscript Found.

Spalding’s associates confirmed that the Oberlin Manuscript (Manuscript Story) was the work of Spalding, but they also insisted that this “Roman” story was not the manuscript they remembered as resembling The Book of Mormon.

See:
http://OliverCowdery.com/hurlbut/HChron4.htm#r036
http://solomonspalding.com/SRP/saga2/Ashtab3.htm#docket1a

JAN 14, 1834 - Hurlburt was ordered to keep the peace and appear before the court on March 31, 1834.

After three days of testimony, the Magistrate's Court concluded "that the complainant had reason to fear" that Hurlburt "would beat wound or kill him or injure his property." The Court required Hurlburt to "enter into a recognizance to keep the peace generally and especially towards the complainant." Hurlburt was also ordered "to appear before the [Geauga Co.] Court of Common Pleas on the first day" of the next term of that Court, to be held at Chardon on March 31.

http://OliverCowdery.com/hurlbut/HChron4.htm#r036

JAN 22, 1834 Mormon Churh leaders reported that the Hurlburt threat was gone. Orson Hyde wrote a letter on behalf of the LDS First Presidency to "the Saints in Missouri": "The hand of the Lord has thus far been stretched out to protect us. Doctor P. Hurlburt an apostate elder from this church, has been put the state of New York, and gathered up all the ridiculous stories that could be invented, and some affidavits respecting the character of Joseph, and the Smith family, and exhibited them to numerous congregations in Chagrin, Kirtland, Mentor, and Painesville, and fired the minds of the people with much indignation, against Joseph and the church. Hurlburt also made many harsh threats, &c.;, that he would take the life of Joseph, if he could not destroy Mormonism without. Bro. Joseph took him with a peace warrant and after three days trial, and investigating the merits of our religion, in the town of Painesville, by able attorneys on both sides, he was bound over to the county court. Thus his influence was pretty much destroyed, and since the trial the spirit of hostility seems to be broken down in a good degree, but how long it will continue so, we cannot say."

http://OliverCowdery.com/hurlbut/HChron4.htm#r036

FEB 1, 1834 Hurlburt gave the affadavits and what is now called the Obeerlin manuscript to Eber Howe. Howe believed that Hurlburt had once had possession of Manuscript Found, but had disposed of it.

Document: Report of a mid-November 1880 interview with E. D. Howe
Source: New Light on Mormonism (1885) pp. 72-73

... the author saw E.D. Howe, at Painesville, Ohio. He admitted writing the letter shown by Hurlburt, and said that a manuscript was given to him by Hurlburt, in 1834, which "had no connection with Mormonism"

He agreed to give Hurlburt five hundred copies of his book ("Mormonism Unveiled"), which agreement he kept, and that was the last he ever saw of him. The manuscript he received from Hurlburt he said was "lying around" his printing-office for twenty years; he "considered it of no account, and did not know what became of it."

I asked if he did not agree to return it to Mrs. Davison, to which he replied:

"Perhaps I did; but it wa'n't of no account, so I did not think of it."

"You used it in your "Mormonism Unveiled?"

"Well, yes; there it was of some use."

I then told him what Hurlburt had said of Howe's connection with the matter.

He grew very red in the face, and remarked:

"Well, Hurlburt is not to be relied on."

I asked if he would make a sworn statement that the words "Mormon, Maroni, Nephi, and Lamenite" were not in the manuscript which Hurlburt gave him by agreement.

"No, I will not swear to it; but I'll answer questions, and my word is as good as Hurlburt's any day."

"You ought, for your own sake, to make a statement to answer him."

He made an odd reply.

"Hurlburt was always an unreliable fellow; he went lecturing in this neighborhood."

"Mr. Howe, did you send Hurlburt to get 'The Manuscript Found?'"

"Yes, I did, and the idea was proposed to me by him."

"Do you think the manuscript was burned in your office?"

"I don't know; it got lost," he replied.

"The whole matter, then, is between you and Hurlburt. Is there a possibility that the original Spalding manuscript will yet come to light?"

"No, I don't think so," he replied, earnestly; "the Mormons had too much at stake to let it exist."

"Then you think Hurlburt destroyed it?"

"I believe he had two manuscripts -- the original one and another -- the one he gave me, which had no resemblance to the 'Book of Mormon.'"

"Do you think Spalding wrote a story from which Rigdon and Smith made the 'Book of Mormon?'"

"Certainly I do," emphasizing the words...

APR 9, 1834 Hurlburt was tried, found guilty and fined.

The case of Ohio v. Dr. P. Hurlbut case reached the court of common pleas at Chardon, Judge Moses Birchard presided. The court found Hurlbut guilty, fined him $200, and ordered him to keep the peace for six months.

See: http://OliverCowdery.com/hurlbut/HChron4.htm#r036

APR 10. 1834 Mormon leaders accused one another of perjury in the case against Hurlburt.

Mormon leaders gathered at N. K. Whitney's store in Kirtland to discuss the trial. Joseph Smith accused Samuel F. Whitney of lying under oath. Whitney accused Smith of lying under oath.
